Emergency Dentist in Brunei: What to Do for Toothache, Chipped or Knocked-Out Teeth

Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. This guide tells you what to do straight away and when you need to see a dentist urgently.

Need urgent dental care now? Call Ting Dental Clinic on 8669770. Our hours are Monday to Saturday 8:15am to 5pm; with after hours on Monday 5pm to 8pm and Friday 5pm to 6pm. We also have special arrangements for Wednesday evenings on request and by appointment.

When should you see a dentist urgently?

Get help as soon as possible if you have:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Swelling in your gum, face or jaw
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • Bleeding that won't stop after dental treatment or an injury
  • A fever together with tooth pain

If you have swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

What to do for a toothache

  1. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
  2. Floss gently to remove any food stuck between the teeth.
  3. Take a standard over-the-counter pain reliever, following the packet instructions. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.
  4. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.
  5. Book a dentist visit. Toothache usually means something needs treating, and pain easing doesn't always mean the problem has gone.

What to do for a chipped or cracked tooth

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  2. Keep any broken piece and bring it with you if possible.
  3. Use a cold compress if there is swelling.
  4. Avoid chewing on that side.
  5. See a dentist promptly, as sharp edges can cut your tongue and the tooth may need protection.

What to do for a knocked-out tooth

Time matters. An adult tooth has the best chance of being saved if you see a dentist within about an hour.

  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root.
  2. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or clean water. Do not scrub it.
  3. If you can, gently place it back into the socket and hold it there. If not, keep it in a small container of milk.
  4. Call a dentist immediately.

Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth.

What to do for a lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you can and avoid chewing on that side. Book an appointment as soon as possible. Do not use super glue.

How to prevent dental emergencies

  • Attend regular check-ups and cleanings
  • Treat small cavities early, before they become painful
  • Get preventive x-rays to detect hidden decay
  • Wear a mouthguard for sports or if you grind your teeth at night
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard sweets or opening packets with your teeth
